About
Tucked into the quiet countryside near the village of Abelia, the Church of Saint Sozon is a modest yet deeply cherished rural chapel that reflects the enduring Orthodox faith woven through every corner of Lesvos. Saint Sozon was an early Christian martyr, traditionally venerated as a shepherd from Phrygia who gave his life for his faith during the Roman persecutions of the early fourth century. His cult spread widely across Asia Minor and the Aegean, and small rural chapels dedicated to him are a testament to the affection ordinary villagers held for this pastoral saint who embodied simple piety and courage. Churches like this one were typically built by local families or communities as acts of devotion, often sited on hillsides or in olive groves where the landscape itself seems to participate in the sacred atmosphere.
The chapel exemplifies the vernacular ecclesiastical architecture of the eastern Aegean — sturdy stone walls, a low-pitched or barrel-vaulted roof, and an intimate interior scaled for the rhythms of village life rather than grand ceremony. Inside, visitors will find the characteristic warmth of a Greek Orthodox sacred space: a carved wooden iconostasis separating the nave from the sanctuary, oil lamps casting a gentle glow over painted icons, and the faint scent of beeswax and incense that lingers in even the smallest of chapels. Saint Sozon's feast day falls on the seventh of September, and it is on such name days that these otherwise quiet chapels come fully alive, with locals gathering for the liturgy and the communal meal that follows, keeping traditions alive that have persisted for generations across the Lesvian countryside.
Before you go
What to expect
The chapel sits quietly among olive trees near Abelia, its stone walls worn by generations of local hands bringing small acts of devotion. Inside the intimate space, oil lamps flicker before painted icons and the air carries that unmistakable blend of beeswax and incense that clings to even the smallest Greek Orthodox chapel. On ordinary days it offers deep stillness; arrive on the seventh of September and you will find the community gathered for the feast-day liturgy and the shared meal that follows.
Best time to visit
September 7th, Saint Sozon's feast day, brings the chapel fully to life; otherwise spring and early autumn offer the most pleasant countryside around it.
How to get there
From Mytilene, head north toward Kalloni then continue into the northern interior toward Abelia — the drive typically takes between one hour and one and a half hours. The chapel lies in the countryside near the village, so a local map or directions from Abelia residents will help you pinpoint it.

On the way from Anaxos, we hike through picturesque cliffs and along dirt roads we call "the goat road." Picturesque views and a beautiful sunset await. It's worth visiting and lighting a candle in the picturesque little chapel. Descending the cliff down about 140 steps is also a challenge, especially for those with a slight fear of heights.

This is a fabulous remote church that looks so beautiful when you look down on it from up high on the cliffs above. There are steps leading down. We found it whilst hiking from Ambelia Beach back over the cliff-tops to Anasos. Totally worth visiting this little church as such an unusual place to find a church. Stunning views from all around.
