Avlonas

Avlonas is one of Lesvos's most quietly tucked-away settlements, a coastal hamlet sitting almost at the waterline on the island's northern shore. With a permanent population of fewer than thirty souls, it belongs to that dwindling category of Greek villages where time seems to have made a gentler bargain with modernity. The name Avlonas echoes an ancient Greek word for a valley or channel, hinting at the sheltered geography that likely drew the first settlers here — a modest natural harbour offering refuge from the winds that roll in off the straits separating Lesvos from the Anatolian coast, visible on clear days just a few kilometres to the east.
