Overview
Pterounda is a tiny village tucked between Vatoussa and Xidera in the volcanic interior of western Lesvos. A seasonal taverna, Lena's, draws visitors from across the island for souvlakia, grilled dishes, and mezedes served on a terrace overlooking the caldera landscape. In summer, a natural waterfall adds an unexpected touch of green to the dry volcanic terrain. The village is a stop on the route between Kalloni and Sigri, and those who pause here discover a community of perhaps a few dozen permanent residents living amid some of the most striking geology on the island. Pterounda is not a destination — it is a discovery, the kind of place that rewards aimless exploration of the back roads of western Lesvos.
Before you go
What to expect
Sit on Lena's terrace with a plate of souvlakia and you're looking straight out over a volcanic caldera landscape that feels unlike anywhere else on the island. In summer a small waterfall appears in the otherwise dry terrain nearby, a genuine surprise for anyone who stops along the Kalloni–Sigri road. The handful of permanent residents go about their day largely undisturbed — this is a place you stumble upon and then find yourself thinking about later.
Best time to visit
Late June through September, when Lena's taverna is open and the caldera landscape bakes under clear summer skies.
How to get there
Head west from Mytilene toward Kalloni, then continue on the main road toward Sigri — Pterouda sits along this route and the drive takes roughly an hour to an hour and a half.
