Well worth the walk up the hill. A great chapel, quet and peaceful. Puts your mind at rest when you have been inside and seen the detail. Sit on the steps outside and enjoy the fantastic view over Petra Bay

Came across this lovely little remote church next to a lovely big olive tree whilst hiking from Petri to Molyvos. It’s is the middle of nowhere but was a lovely find. We looked inside and then sat outside on the stones admiring the view and enjoying the peace and quiet. Very pleasant.

About

The chapel of Agia Foteini stands in the quiet coastal landscape near Skala Loutron, a small seaside settlement on the northeastern shore of Lesvos where the Aegean narrows toward the Turkish coast. Dedicated to Saint Photini, the Samaritan woman of the Gospel of John who encountered Christ at Jacob's Well, the church carries one of the most spiritually resonant dedications in the Orthodox calendar. Photini is venerated as Equal to the Apostles and Great Martyr, and her memory is celebrated on the Fifth Sunday of Pascha as well as on March 20, when local faithful gather to honor her with liturgy and the communal warmth that has always animated village religious life on the island.

Like many rural chapels scattered across Lesvos, Agia Foteini reflects the modest vernacular ecclesiastical architecture of the eastern Aegean, built to serve the spiritual needs of a small fishing and farming community rather than to impress with grandeur. The interior typically preserves the intimate atmosphere characteristic of such chapels, where the iconostasis and devotional icons create a contemplative space that has anchored the faith of generations. The surrounding area near Loutra has long been known for its therapeutic thermal springs, lending the landscape a particular sense of timelessness and healing that complements the chapel's own spiritual character.

For visitors exploring the northeastern corner of Lesvos, Agia Foteini offers a genuine encounter with the living religious culture of the island. Far from the tourist circuit, it embodies the way Orthodox Christianity is woven into the everyday geography of Greek island life, with each headland, cove, and hillside marked by a small sanctuary that tells the story of a community's faith across centuries. The feast days bring together neighbors, returning emigrants, and occasional pilgrims in a celebration that blends liturgy, song, and shared food in the tradition that has defined Greek village life since Byzantine times.

Before you go

What to expect

Step inside and you find a candlelit space where the iconostasis feels close enough to touch — the kind of chapel where a handful of worshippers fills the room and the smell of incense lingers long after the liturgy ends. Many visitors stop here on their way to or from the thermal springs at nearby Loutra, though feast-day pilgrims come specifically for the service and the communal meal that follows.

Best time to visit

March 20 and the Fifth Sunday of Pascha bring the chapel to life with liturgy and gathering; for a quiet, contemplative visit, spring and early autumn are ideal.

How to get there

From Mytilene, follow the coastal road north toward Skala Loutron — roughly 15 to 20 minutes by car. Follow signs for Loutra; the chapel sits within the small seaside settlement.

Little Chapel, not much to see but if bored can be fun to walk up to as one path is shaded.
