About

Mandamados has long been one of the great pottery villages of Lesvos, a tradition stretching back centuries rooted in the island's abundant clay deposits and the practical needs of an agrarian and maritime community. Dimitris Stamatis Pottery carries this living craft forward, offering visitors a genuine encounter with the handmade ceramic tradition that once supplied households across the northern Aegean with everything from storage jars and cooking vessels to decorative ware. Stepping into the workshop, you enter a space where the smell of fired earth and the sight of works in progress on the wheel tell a story that no museum can fully replicate.

A visit here is as much about witnessing the process as it is about taking something home. The pieces on display typically range from functional everyday items to decorative works inspired by local motifs and the colours of the Aegean landscape — blues, ochres, and terracottas that mirror the village and sea beyond. Whether you are looking for a handcrafted plate, a simple jug, or a unique gift that carries genuine provenance, the work on offer here is rooted in place in a way that mass-produced souvenirs simply are not.

Mandamados itself rewards a slow visit — the village is also home to the celebrated Monastery of the Taxiarch Archangel Michael, making Dimitris Stamatis Pottery a natural complement to any morning or afternoon spent exploring the area. Pairing the spiritual gravity of the monastery with the quiet, grounded craft of the pottery studio gives visitors a layered sense of what this corner of northern Lesvos has preserved across generations.

Before you go

What to expect

The workshop greets you with the smell of fired clay and unfired earth, with pieces at various stages arranged around a wheel in active use — this is a genuine working studio, not a shop dressed to resemble one. Functional everyday ware sits alongside decorative pieces in the blues, ochres, and terracottas drawn from the surrounding Aegean landscape and village rooftops. A stop here fits seamlessly into a morning that begins at the Monastery of the Taxiarch Archangel Michael, just a short walk away.

Best time to visit

Late spring and early autumn are the most comfortable times to visit; July and August see more day-trippers passing through the village.

How to get there

Mandamados is about 45 minutes by car from Mytilene, heading north through the island's interior. Follow signs for Mandamados and the Taxiarch monastery; the pottery is within the village.

Excellent multi-generational family business. Everything is hand made and decorated in the shop. I have purchased from them over 23 years and the ceramics are high quality, durable, and beautiful. Many styles and colors to choose from. They create simple things like plates, cups, and bowls as well as elaborate decorative vases, hookahs, and decorative plates to display on a wall. If you want a traditional, authentic Greek ceramic piece that will last a lifetime with proper care, they will have something to suit you. The family is very kind, credit cards are accepted, and your purchases are carefully wrapped.

Very beautiful artisic products. Located in a very quiet curve before the village. Logical prices, very kind and helpful owners. I've been in other similar shops but this one had more creativity. They work with love. A must to stop, take a look and take a piece of Lesvos with you to home
