About

Lesvos is one of Greece's most celebrated olive oil islands, home to millions of ancient olive trees whose silver-green groves stretch across the hillsides in every direction, and the Elaiourgikos Synetairismos Stypsis — the Olive Oil Cooperative of Stypsi — sits at the heart of this living tradition. Cooperatives like this one have long served as the collective backbone of rural Lesbian agriculture, pooling the harvests of local smallholder farmers to press, bottle, and bring to market some of the island's finest extra virgin olive oil. The cooperative model means that what you find here is not a commercial product engineered for mass appeal, but oil shaped by the land immediately surrounding you — the particular soil, microclimate, and centuries-old Kolovi and Adramyttini olive varieties that define northern Lesvos.

Stopping here gives visitors a rare chance to connect directly with the agrarian soul of the island, far from the busier tourist circuits of Mytilene or Molyvos. Depending on the season, you may witness or learn about the pressing process itself, and the cooperative typically offers local oil for purchase at prices that reflect its true provenance rather than a tourist markup. The village of Stypsi nearby is a quiet, traditional settlement perched in the rolling interior, and pairing a visit to the cooperative with a wander through the village gives a full picture of how olive culture has shaped daily life here for generations. For anyone serious about Greek food, olive oil, or the working landscapes of the Aegean, this is a stop worth making.

Before you go

What to expect

Walking into a working olive oil cooperative feels nothing like a tourist shop — you're entering a place where the island's agricultural economy is quietly operating as it has for generations. The air carries a faint grassy scent of fresh oil, bottles of Kolovi and Adramyttini varieties line the shelves, and the people you meet are likely smallholder farmers or their family members rather than retail staff. During harvest season, the pressing equipment may be running.

Best time to visit

Autumn (October–November) is pressing season and the most atmospheric time to visit; spring is pleasant for the drive through the silvery-green groves.

How to get there

Stypsi sits in the northern interior, roughly an hour's drive from Mytilene following the main road toward Kalloni and then heading inland — the cooperative is in or near the village itself.

We visited this cooperative establishment, and Mr. Nikos welcomed us very warmly and gave us a tour of the facility, explaining all the production stages. It's an extremely clean establishment. We tasted the products and they were delicious. We bought plenty of high-quality olive oil. If you ever come to this area, I highly recommend stopping by and buying olive oil here. Huge congratulations to all the cooperative employees! 👏👏

I have called 4 times in a row, they pick up the phone and I hear someone talking in the background and they hang up immediately. (4 times exactly the same)
