Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Therapon
Ιερός Ναός Αγίου Θεράποντος
Visitors say
Beautiful, both on the inside and from th outside. It's usually open. It's also got a little square with a few benches so you can sit and admireit a little.
Excellent aesthetics and a grandiose church. Built in the Catholic style so it wouldn't make a great choice for a traditional ceremony.
About
The Church of Saint Therapon stands as one of the most prominent ecclesiastical landmarks in Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos. Dedicated to Saint Therapon, a venerated bishop and martyr of the early Christian church, the church holds a central place in the religious life of the island. Its neo-Byzantine architecture, characterized by a commanding dome and carefully proportioned facade, reflects the revival of Byzantine forms that spread through Greek ecclesiastical construction in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The interior is richly adorned with iconostasis work, devotional icons, and painted decoration in the Orthodox tradition, creating an atmosphere of solemn beauty that draws both the faithful and visitors with an interest in religious art.
For the people of Mytilene, Saint Therapon is not merely a building but a spiritual anchor. The church serves as a gathering place for the major feasts of the liturgical calendar, and the feast day of Saint Therapon, celebrated on the 27th of May, brings together the local community in procession and prayer. As the seat of religious observance in the heart of the capital, it witnesses baptisms, weddings, and memorial services that mark the rhythm of Lesbian family life across generations.
Visitors exploring central Mytilene will find the church an essential stop for understanding the island's deep-rooted Orthodox heritage. Whether attending a service, admiring the architecture from the surrounding streets, or stepping inside to view the sacred art, the Church of Saint Therapon offers a meaningful encounter with the spiritual and cultural identity that has shaped Lesvos for centuries.
Before you go
What to expect
Standing in the heart of Mytilene, Saint Therapon rewards a visit with its imposing neo-Byzantine dome visible from the surrounding streets and a hushed interior layered in gold icons and painted devotional scenes. Locals stop in to light a candle; visitors tend to linger before the iconostasis and the quality of the painted decoration. On May 27th, the feast day of the saint draws the neighbourhood into procession and communal prayer.
Best time to visit
The church is open year-round; visiting in late May catches the feast-day celebrations when the surrounding streets fill with the local community.
How to get there
Saint Therapon is effectively in central Mytilene, a short walk from the harbour esplanade and the main commercial street — no car needed from anywhere in the town centre.

Beautiful Byzantine church in this small city. It's fairly modern and the intricate details are quite impressive. Admission is free of course.
