This waterfall is absolutely stunning! But here’s a heads up: during the summer months, it’s dry because there’s no rain. So, make sure to check the weather forecast before you go. If it’s raining or has been recently, you’ll be in for a treat!

About

Tucked into the verdant hills near the quiet village of Aspropotamos, Man Katsa Waterfall is one of Lesvos's rewarding natural discoveries, set amid the lush interior landscape that surprises many visitors who expect only coastline from the island. The surrounding terrain is fed by seasonal streams that carve through olive groves and dense vegetation, creating a cool, shaded retreat that stands in pleasing contrast to the sun-baked Aegean shores. The waterfall itself draws those who appreciate Lesvos beyond its beaches, offering a glimpse of the island's wilder, greener face.

As a visitor destination and local business, Man Katsa provides a place to pause and take in the natural surroundings, making it a worthwhile stop for walkers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking a slower pace away from the main tourist circuits. The area around Aspropotamos is seldom crowded, which lends the experience an unhurried, authentic quality that feels increasingly rare. Whether you arrive on foot along one of the rural tracks or by car along winding country roads, the sense of arrival at somewhere genuinely off the beaten path is part of the appeal.

Lesvos has long been celebrated for its ecological richness, and spots like Man Katsa illustrate why the island holds a special place among nature travelers in the Aegean. The sound of running water, the shade of surrounding trees, and the serenity of the inland countryside make this a restorative stop on any itinerary that ventures beyond the coastal towns. Visitors are encouraged to combine a visit here with an exploration of the surrounding villages, where traditional island life continues at its own unhurried rhythm.

Before you go

What to expect

The sound of water announces the falls before they come into view — a cool, tree-shaded hollow tucked between olive groves and dense scrub that feels far removed from the sun-baked Aegean coast. Visitors come to sit, listen, and slow down; the near-total absence of crowds gives the place a genuinely unhurried quality. It pairs well with a slow drive through the surrounding villages of the island's green interior.

Best time to visit

Spring (April–May) is the sweet spot, when seasonal streams run at their strongest and the surrounding hillsides are vividly green; by late summer the water flow may reduce considerably.

How to get there

From Mytilene, head north into the island's interior toward Aspropotamos — the drive takes roughly 45–55 minutes on winding country roads. A car is essentially necessary, as the village and waterfall are well off any main bus route.

An easy hiking of 200 meters or 1 km if you park next to the street. Dog friendly. Try to be there during Spring time after 3 to get the sunlight and may see a rainbow!

Superb waterfall and nature. Easy walking due to good walkways.

You can take the dirt road up and after a few minutes you will find a parking place. Go through the gate and with a really nice well signed 10 minute walk and going down some steps you will reach the waterfall. We went there 9th of June and there was only a sprinkle of water still coming down (so be aware it might be dry soon), but nonetheless we really enjoyed the beautiful place, the turtles, dragon flies, lizards and we spotted a little snake in the cave. We definitely recommend going here!

Impressive waterfall on Lesvos island. Only 1,5 km from main road and 150m walking. Free parking area. Frequent signs point to the waterfall

In January 2025 it was full and beautiful! The walk in is fairly easy until the end where there are very steep rock steps. There is a railing but this is probably dangerous for the very young or very old.

Almost bone dry in August 2024. Just a beautiful piece of nature, no waterfall.

Beautiful location, only 30 km from Mytilini. The waterfall is easy to find. Just follow the signs, there are plenty of them. I recommend parking your car by the main road and walk the last 1500 m because the dirt road is in really bad condition. It's also a pleasant walk with nice views of the countryside. When you arrive at the waterfall you'll have to make your way down on a pretty steep path. It's not really suitable for younger children or elderly. Well worth a visit.
