J. BARBAYANNIS OUZO DISTILLERIES LTD
Visitors say
You can buy bottles (1 liter) of ouzo. My favourite one is green. It is a cute family place. Still my favourite is Turkish raki, Beylerbeyi Gobek ;)
100% distilled green, blue or white labels and finally the Aphrodite bottle with 48% alcohol, which is my favourite one.
About
Lesvos is rightly celebrated as the ouzo capital of Greece, producing a remarkable share of the country's beloved anise spirit, and the Barbayannis distillery stands as one of the island's most storied names in this tradition. Nestled near Plomari on the southern coast, close to the quiet village of Agios Isidoros, the Barbayannis family has been crafting ouzo for generations, blending grape pomace distillate with anise and a closely guarded selection of botanicals in copper pot stills. The result is an ouzo with a distinctive character — smooth, fragrant, and deeply tied to the terroir and craft knowledge of the island.
A visit here offers far more than a simple tasting. The distillery welcomes guests into a working environment where the tradition of Lesbian ouzo-making is very much alive, and the on-site museum traces the history of the family and the broader story of ouzo production on the island. Bottles of Barbayannis ouzo line the shelves in multiple expressions, from classic clear to the rare aged variety that takes on a golden hue from resting in oak, and the staff are generous guides through the differences between them.
For any visitor to Lesvos, stopping at a historic ouzo house like Barbayannis is an essential cultural experience, not merely a souvenir opportunity. Ouzo is woven into the daily rhythm of Greek island life — sipped slowly over meze at a harborside table as the afternoon light fades — and understanding where it comes from and how it is made gives that ritual a depth that cannot be found in a duty-free bottle. Barbayannis is a place where craft, family pride, and island identity all pour into the same glass.
Before you go
What to expect
The moment you step inside, the warm scent of anise from the copper pot stills sets the tone — this is a working distillery, not a showroom. You can follow the production process from grape pomace to finished bottle, move through the family museum, and then settle in for a guided tasting that walks you through the range from classic clear ouzo to the rare oak-aged expression that carries a warm golden colour. The staff explain the botanical choices with genuine enthusiasm, and the pace is unhurried.
Best time to visit
Spring and early autumn are ideal — comfortable driving weather for the southern coast road and fewer tour groups at the tasting counter.
How to get there
Drive south from Mytilene toward Plomari, then follow signs for Agios Isidoros; the journey takes roughly 35–40 minutes. The distillery is well-signposted once you reach the Plomari area.

6th generation family business. Upstairs, there is a museum where we received a guided tour in English. Afterwards, you can walk outside to the company itself, where you can follow the production process from distilling to packaging, and then you can taste the different ouzos. Very tasty products. The visit is completely free, but there is, of course, a company shop. Very reasonable prices; we bought a "case" with a selection of their 4 ouzos.

Factory where the best ouzo I've ever tasted is produced! It's got an ouzo museum upstairs, and you can actually witness the production phases and the assembly line downstairs. 'Aphrodite' is highly recommended!
