About
Tucked into the village of Agiasos, one of Lesvos's most beloved and characterful mountain settlements, Sousamli Maria O.E. is a traditional Greek bakery that captures the spirit of this proudly local community. Agiasos sits in the forested foothills of Mount Olympus and is known for its vibrant folk culture, its carnival celebrations, and its dedication to preserving old ways — a bakery like this one fits naturally into that fabric, offering handmade breads and sesame-laced treats that have sustained village life for generations.
The name itself hints at what draws people here: sousamli refers to sesame-covered goods, a cornerstone of Greek baking tradition. Visitors can expect the kinds of rustic loaves, koulouri rings, and sweet or savory pastries that rarely survive the journey beyond the village limits. The aromas alone, drifting through the narrow stone-paved lanes of Agiasos, are reason enough to follow your nose and step inside.
For travelers passing through Agiasos — whether stopping to explore its Byzantine church of the Panagia, wander its old bazaar, or simply escape the coastal heat in the cool mountain air — a visit to a local bakery like this one grounds the experience in everyday Greek life. Picking up something fresh and sesame-dusted to eat on a shaded kafeneion step is the kind of simple, unhurried pleasure that Lesvos does better than almost anywhere else in the Aegean.
Before you go
What to expect
In the stone-paved lanes of Agiasos, the warm scent of sesame and fresh bread drifts into the street and draws you in before you've made a decision. You step inside to find rustic loaves and sesame-dusted rings made the way they've always been made here, grab something still warm, and eat it on a shaded step outside. It's a brief stop, but one that roots you firmly in the daily life of this mountain village.
Best time to visit
Spring through early autumn is ideal; Agiasos sits cool in the forested hills and is a welcome escape from coastal heat in July and August.
How to get there
From Mytilene, Agiasos is roughly 30 to 40 minutes inland by car, climbing through forested hills toward the slopes of Mount Olympus. The village center is compact enough to explore entirely on foot once you arrive.

The woman working with short blonde hair is very rude and the desserts are not tasty, I didn't like this shop 👎

We came here to get some pastries for breakfast. I tried the round ones that looked like turkish simit and they were amazing. Perfect amount of crispy but not dry. My husband tried the börek with feta and said it was ok. Whenever I’m in Greece I try the börek with cream as a sweet treat so I got that one as well but it was a little different then the regular Greek ones; it had syrup so it was a little heavy for my taste. We got the pastries and went to a cafe nearby, ordered our coffies and had breakfast there. I’d recommend doing the same since the bakery didn’t have any tables.

Visited Agiassos today, walked up to the market square, and bought some pastries and biscuits here. What a fantastic bakery with delicious baked products. So much to choose from. Very fresh and tasted delicious. Wish we’d bought more! We had some filo spinach pies, some baked pretzel-like rings .. one was beetroot flavoured with seeds and the other covered in tasty sunflower seeds. Best I’ve ever tasted. We also had some biscuits coated in chocolate at one end. These were delicious too, and not too sweet.
