Beach of Rabbit Island
About
Tucked just off the northwestern coast of Lesvos near the village of Anaxos, the Beach of Rabbit Island takes its name from the tiny, uninhabited islet that sits tantalizingly close to shore, a landmark that has given this stretch of coastline its distinctive character for generations. The beach itself is part of the broader Anaxos bay, a sheltered arc of golden sand framed by olive-covered hills and looking out across the calm northern Aegean toward the distant mountains of the Turkish coast. The shallow, crystal-clear waters here make it one of the more family-friendly spots in this part of the island, with gentle gradients and typically calm conditions even when the meltemi wind picks up elsewhere.
The islet itself is the main draw, small enough that confident swimmers can reach it from shore in just a few minutes, passing over beds of posidonia seagrass that teem with small fish and marine life. Snorkeling around its rocky base reveals an underwater world of striking clarity, with the transparent blue-green water offering visibility that regularly delights first-time visitors. The combination of a swimmable island just offshore and a relaxed, unspoiled beach setting gives this spot an adventurous yet unhurried quality that is increasingly rare along the more developed stretches of the Aegean coast.
The Anaxos area sits within easy reach of Petra and Molyvos, two of Lesvos's most celebrated villages, making this beach a natural stop for anyone exploring the island's picturesque northwest. Whether you wade out toward the islet, spread a towel on the sand as the afternoon light turns the water gold, or simply sit and watch the fishing boats pass against the backdrop of the open sea, the Beach of Rabbit Island offers one of those quietly memorable Aegean experiences that stays with you long after the holiday ends.
Before you go
What to expect
The islet sitting just offshore sets the rhythm here — most visitors end up swimming out to it at least once, picking their way through shallow, transparent water above posidonia meadows thick with small fish. Back on the sand, the mood is unhurried: olive-covered hills frame the bay from behind while the silhouette of the Turkish coast hovers across the water in the distance. It is the kind of place where an hour stretches comfortably into an afternoon.
Best time to visit
June through September for swimming; the sheltered bay stays noticeably calmer than exposed northern beaches when the meltemi picks up in July and August.
How to get there
From Mytilene, drive north through Kalloni toward Petra and Molyvos; Anaxos is signposted off the main road shortly before Petra, roughly an hour's drive in total. The beach sits right at the village edge.

Beautiful island with lots of birds. There is a small beach. Clean water, you can admire the life in the sea. Lots of fish, interesting bottom for snooker lovers. On the island, a marked path leads to abandoned buildings among the nests of lots of birds. Access only from the sea by boat or kayak. In Anaxos, you can use the equipment rental on the beach and sail. I recommend visiting.

We didn't see any rabbits, but that didn't spoil our fun. Once we arrived on this island (with the tour from Captain Alexandros), we thoroughly enjoyed it! This island is great for snorkeling and truly relaxing. If you're in Lesbos, we highly recommend taking the Rabbit Island tour with Captain Alexandros on his Calypso glass-bottom boat!

This little piece of paradise is simply stunning! Whether you arrive by boat or kayak, you're in for an adventure. On the island, there's a somewhat rugged path, so make sure to wear sturdy shoes instead of slippers. The rocky mountain is easily traversed, and you can access it via a charming little beach. Despite rumors of sea urchins, I found it safe for a relaxing swim. This hidden gem is a must-visit! 🏝️
