About

Lesvos is one of the great olive islands of the Mediterranean, home to millions of trees — some of them centuries old — whose silvery canopies blanket the hillsides stretching inland from the southern coast. In this landscape of ancient groves and terraced slopes, the Eirini Plomariou Organic Olive Mill carries on a tradition that has shaped the island's identity and economy for generations. Operating with certified organic practices, the mill presses olives without synthetic inputs, honoring both the land and the integrity of the fruit, and producing extra virgin olive oil that reflects the particular character of the Plomari region's soil and climate.

Visitors who make the short drive up to Ano Chorio will find here a chance to understand olive oil not as a supermarket commodity but as a craft product rooted in place. The mill offers a window into the pressing process, from the moment the olives arrive after harvest to the golden-green oil that emerges — dense, grassy, and peppery in the way that fresh, high-quality Lesvos oil tends to be. Depending on the season, guests may witness the mill in full operation during the autumn and winter harvest months, when the air carries the faintly fruity scent of freshly pressed olives and the rhythms of work feel unchanged from those of a century ago.

Beyond the education and the sensory experience, stopping at Eirini Plomariou is an act of direct connection with the island's agricultural soul. Purchasing a bottle here supports organic farming in a region where the olive grove is not just a crop but a living landscape of cultural and ecological significance. For anyone traveling through southern Lesvos — whether en route to Plomari's famous ouzo distilleries or exploring the quiet villages of the interior — this organic mill offers one of the most honest and memorable encounters with what makes the island genuinely distinctive.

Before you go

What to expect

The mill operates as a working agricultural business rather than a curated visitor attraction, which is exactly what makes it worthwhile. You can follow the full arc from incoming olives to finished oil, taste a freshly pressed extra virgin that tends toward grassy and peppery, and leave with a bottle whose provenance you personally witnessed. During harvest season the air inside carries a faintly fruity, vegetal scent that is unlike anything you encounter in a supermarket olive oil aisle.

Best time to visit

October through February is when the presses run and the experience is most alive; outside harvest season the mill is quieter but oil purchases and tastings are still available.

How to get there

From Mytilene, drive south toward Plomari and then continue up to Ano Chorio — allow roughly 40 to 50 minutes on winding roads through the olive groves of southern Lesvos.

We arrived last night, not as part of a planned tour. The place is simply wonderful! Olive oil of the highest quality. And we are olive oil lovers. The young Irini, the daughter of the owners, welcomed us warmly. She gave us a professional private tour. She added us to the group that came for the tasting. Before we left, her lovely mother insisted that we take a homemade pastry with us. What a warm and wonderful family. And the best oil in the world!

We heard that there is an excellent olive oil here. We only came to buy olive oil, and the lovely Erini (the owner's daughter) welcomed us warmly and patiently explained the process of making the oil. We tasted bruschetta with olive oil and oregano. We bought excellent wine, honey, olive oil soap and even dried oregano. The place is very special, with a beautiful view and the people are warm and inviting. We will definitely go back there again and arrange dinner in front of the view.

A fantastic evening! We had a nice walk among the olive trees up in the mountains above Plomari, just before sunset, smelling the herbs, tasting the fantastic oil, and learning about the process of making organic olive oil The evening ended with the most delicious dinner we have had for twenty years on this island, homemade with love and Irini organic olive oil. Highly recomended!
