Heliotrope Hotel
Visitors say
Rooms are spacious and clean, bit outdated but still comfortable. There is a public beach next to the hotel, we loved it. There is a restaurant next door, are there twice, food was very good. Small supermarket next to the hotel as well, very convenient.
Lovely staff. Very convenient location near the airport, the rooms have ample space.
About
Nestled in the quiet coastal village of Vareia, just a short drive south of Mytilene along the eastern shore of Lesvos, the Heliotrope Hotel takes its name from the Greek word for sunflower — a plant that turns perpetually toward the light — and the property embodies that same sun-soaked spirit. Positioned where the Aegean shimmers just beyond the olive groves and the skyline of the island's capital glows on the horizon, the hotel offers guests an ideal base for exploring the rich cultural belt that surrounds Mytilene. Vareia itself is no ordinary village; it is the birthplace of Nobel laureate Odysseas Elytis and home to both the Theophilos Museum and the Teriade Museum, making this corner of Lesvos one of the most culturally significant stretches on the island.
The Heliotrope provides the kind of unhurried hospitality that Lesvos does so well — a place where mornings begin with strong Greek coffee and the sound of the sea, and evenings wind down with the amber light that painters and poets have chased to this island for generations. Guests can walk to the nearby museums within minutes, cycle or drive into Mytilene for its vibrant waterfront tavernas and neoclassical architecture, or simply settle into the rhythm of island life that the village pace encourages. For travellers who want proximity to the capital without surrendering the calm of a smaller community, and who appreciate a property whose name hints at warmth, light, and Mediterranean ease, the Heliotrope is a natural and welcoming choice.
Before you go
What to expect
The hotel sits where Vareia quiets toward the sea, with the Theophilos and Teriade museums a short walk away and Mytilene's rooftops visible on clear days. Mornings here have that particular Aegean stillness — light on the water, the scent of olive groves — before the day opens up toward the capital's waterfront or the cultural sites just outside the door. It suits travellers who want a calm base without feeling cut off.
Best time to visit
Late April through October offers the best combination of weather and open tavernas; July and August are warmest but also the busiest.
How to get there
Vareia is about a 10-minute drive south of Mytilene along the coastal road, roughly 4–5 km; most navigation apps find the hotel easily by name or village.

The hotel, situated along the route to the airport, offered a room that, while showing its age, was nonetheless spacious, clean, and comfortable. The air conditioning unit, however, was rather noisy and appeared worn. The elevator provided a unique and nostalgic experience. While the hotel does have a pool and the beach is nearby, direct access from the hotel is unavailable. The breakfast was adequate, and the staff members were both kind and helpful.

I will not come here again and I don’t recommend anyone does and here is why: first off the hotel is amazing nice location good hygiene but the service? The absolute WORST the hotel workers ( especially at the bar) are always on their phone and they make drinks for them selves and go swimming like they are on vacation! Isn’t that really weird because I AM ON VACATION and ur doing nothing! The food takes to long to arrive and it’s not even that good food but there is a very nice fish place right next To the hotel so if u go I recommend u eat there because service is very nice and the food is fantastic. Way better than the heliotrope hotel! Also the bar at the pool opens at 2pm which is very late and u can’t order before 2pm and u can’t drink or eat anything from a different store so they basically won’t let u eat anything at all before 2pm!.. they don’t pick up dirty plates from tables and they also won’t come up to you to ask if you would like to order anything. I will not come back again and I told the workers I will leave a bad review. The ladies at the reception are very nice and great service but the other hotel workers including the lifeguards are not and give very bad service

Dear Sofie,
Thank you for your feedback. We’re glad you appreciated our location and the cleanliness of the hotel. However, we are truly sorry to hear that your overall experience didn’t meet your expectations.

To clarify a few points, our pool bar opens promptly at 12:00pm (not 2:00 pm), and we offer a full breakfast buffet from 7:30 am to 11:00 am, which is available to all guests before the bar opens. We certainly didn’t intend to make you wait for a meal, so we hope that was helpful to know.

As for our bar staff, we do ensure that they take orders and issue receipts via their phones, as it allows us to serve you quickly and efficiently. We’re sorry if this gave the impression of our team “vacationing” while working. Rest assured, their phones are tools to help manage our busy service, not for personal enjoyment. Also, they are allowed to use the pool on their days off or after their shift especially during this heat wave we are experiencing.

In regard to your comment about the food, while we do pride ourselves on offering great quality and care in all our dishes, we understand that every guest has different tastes. We’re glad you found a nearby restaurant you enjoyed and appreciate your recommendation. However, we do work hard to provide an experience that’s unique to our hotel, and we’ll be sure to keep refining our menu based on guest feedback.

We genuinely value your feedback and hope that this clarifies some of the misunderstandings. We would love the opportunity to welcome you back in the future, should you choose to stay with us again.

Best regards,
Hotel Management
Heliotrope Hotel

Wonderful Honeymoon Experience at Heliotrope Hotels We stayed at Heliotrope Hotels for our honeymoon, and overall, it was a memorable experience. The hotel staff were incredibly kind and helpful, especially the receptionist, Rania, who went above and beyond. My wife had a minor accident during our stay, and the lifeguard bandaged her foot. The bar staff were also amazing, particularly one of the women who worked there. She was very warm, and we bonded over feeding the cats together. The hotel is pet-friendly, which was a huge plus for us! The view from the hotel was stunning, adding to the overall relaxing atmosphere. The rooms were exceptionally clean, and the housekeeping staff ensured our room was spotless every day. Additionally, all the hotel staff were extremely polite and attentive, making our stay even more enjoyable. The breakfast buffet was outstanding, offering a wide variety of delicious options. We also loved the spacious pool, which made for a truly relaxing experience. We are grateful for the hospitality and highly recommend Heliotrope Hotels for anyone looking for a cozy, pet-friendly, and relaxing getaway.

First negatives (1) The room where I stayed was not properly located. The air conditioner was hung on the wall where the bed is located. That means, the air conditioner blows air to your face when sleeping, which can cause you to catch a cold easily. (2) The balcony cannot be opened fully because of the bed near balcony door that blocks it. So, i could not get enough fresh air. Second positives: -The breakfast was quite satisfying. It was very rich and fresh. -The location is great. Both near airport and city centre and some local beaches. -The working personnel was friendly and they are doing their best to please the visitors. I thank them.

I stayed here for 4 nights. Nice and helpful staff, clean rooms & swimming pool, great sea view, all-you-can-eat breakfast, quiet and family-friendly atmosphere, fast internet, cold & hot water in the shower, working A/C, 5-min-away location from the city centre (port) by car, bus stops right in front of the hotel. What else could I ask for? This amazing crew deserves the best! Efcharisto for the hospitality ❤️

The rooms were nice but could be cleaner. We did not need much in term of service. Breakfast could have been more varied. It is in a comfortable location in terms of transportation, about 4-5km from the center.

I absolutely enjoyed my stay. The staff was amazing and extremely helpful. The breakfast was super. I couldn't believe how many options were available for breakfast. The lifeguard and pool bar host were super friendly. You are right across from the ocean, but sometimes an afternoon pool dip is fun as well. The cleaning staff left the room spotless. There is easy parking as well. This was my first time staying at Heliotrope and I certainly will stay again. And well, you can't beat waking up with a view of the ocean from your balcony. I just wanted to say thank you to all the wonderful team members at the hotel.

Real gem!! Fortunately not a hidden one. Excellent hotel with spacious rooms, relaxing pool area, friendly staff and attention to details such comfy beds that seems to be a luxury in Greece. And at a very reasonable price. Only thing missing is a sandy beach right in front. But you really don't need to the pool and those fluffy sunbeds..
