Beautiful little church embedded in the most pictures location one can think of. Open for a short visit and certainly worth a picture with the sea in the background.

World renowned church that is depicted in one of the works of famous Greek writer, Stratis Myrivilis. Located on the furthest part of the port. It’s a must see!

About

Perched on a small rocky outcrop that juts into the sea at the edge of Skala Sykamineas harbour, the Panagia Gorgona — the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary — is one of the most iconic and photographed spots on the entire island of Lesvos. The chapel is intrinsically linked to the celebrated Greek author Stratis Myrivilis, who drew upon this very setting for his beloved novel "The Mermaid Madonna," giving the church its evocative popular name. Gazing at the whitewashed walls reflected in the still water of the harbour, it is easy to understand how this humble place captured the imagination of one of Greece's greatest modern writers.

Inside, the chapel is small and simply adorned in the Orthodox tradition, with an intimate atmosphere that invites quiet reflection. The surrounding village of Skala Sykamineas is itself a gem of the northern Lesvos coastline — a traditional fishing settlement of colourful caiques and waterside tavernas shaded by mulberry trees. Visiting the Panagia Gorgona feels like stepping into the pages of living Greek history, where faith, literature, and the sea are woven together inseparably.

For visitors, the experience here is as much about the setting as the sanctuary itself. Whether you arrive on foot along the coastal path from Sykamia village above or by car along the northern shore road, the first glimpse of the chapel sitting on its rock above the shimmering Aegean is genuinely unforgettable. Come in the early morning when the harbour is quiet and the light is soft, or on the Feast of the Dormition in August when the community gathers to celebrate with a warmth that is quintessentially Lesbian Greek.

Before you go

What to expect

The chapel sits so close to the water that you can hear the harbour lapping against its foundations, with caiques moored just metres away and mulberry-shaded tavernas framing the scene from the waterfront. Inside, the space is stripped back to the essentials of Orthodox devotion — a single oil lamp, a handful of icons — and the hush feels earned rather than imposed. For anyone who has read Myrivilis, standing here closes a loop between literature and landscape in a way few places manage.

Best time to visit

May through October is most rewarding; early mornings bring soft light and an empty harbour, and the Feast of the Dormition on 15 August draws the whole village together in celebration.

How to get there

From Mytilene, follow the northern coast road — the drive winds through olive groves and hillside villages and typically takes an hour to an hour and a half. You can also walk down from Sykamia village on the heights above via the coastal path.

This is such a fabulous picturesque church in one of the most beautiful places on Lesvos (Skala Sikamineas) The church stands out as you walk into the village as it is built high up on a rock overlooking the sea. Truly magnificent sight. When we visited there was a christening taking place and lots of people about celebrating which made the experience even more special. We waited until later and then visited inside. When you climb the steps up to church there are also wonderful views out to sea.
