About
Lesvos is one of the great olive islands of the Mediterranean, home to millions of ancient olive trees that have shaped the landscape, economy, and identity of its people for thousands of years. The Protoulis Olive Mill, situated near the quiet village of Trygonas in the island's interior, is part of this living tradition. Olive mills like this one sit at the heart of local agricultural life, transforming the autumn harvest into the thick, grassy extra-virgin oil for which Lesvos has earned a celebrated reputation. The process — from cold pressing to filtering and bottling — has been refined over generations, and a visit here offers a rare chance to witness that craft firsthand, far from the tourist trails of the coast.
Visitors who make the short journey inland to Trygonas will find the kind of authentic, working rural enterprise that defines the island beyond its beaches. The mill typically operates during the olive harvest season, roughly from late autumn into winter, when the surrounding groves come alive with pickers and the air carries the distinctive green-gold scent of freshly pressed oil. Even outside harvest season, the mill stands as a tangible connection to Lesvian agricultural heritage, and many such operations welcome curious visitors interested in learning about the olive cultivation cycle, tasting the oil, and purchasing bottles to take home.
Stopping at Protoulis is an invitation to slow down and engage with what has sustained this island for millennia. Lesvos olive oil carries protected designation of origin status, a recognition of its exceptional quality rooted in the island's unique microclimate and the age of its trees — many centuries old. Buying directly from a local mill like this one not only supports the family producers behind it but connects the traveller to a product that is genuinely of this place, pressed from the same groves that have fed and enriched Lesvian families across countless generations.
Before you go
What to expect
The sharp, grassy scent of fresh-pressed oil is the first thing you notice stepping inside. This is a genuine working mill — during harvest season you can watch cold-press machinery turn just-picked fruit into the thick, peppery extra-virgin oil Lesvos is known for, and taste it straight from the source. Bottles of PDO-certified oil are available to take home, a far more meaningful souvenir than anything sold on the waterfront.
Best time to visit
Late October through December, when the harvest is underway and the press is actively running; outside that window the mill is quieter but oil is still sold direct.
How to get there
Trygonas sits in the island's interior, roughly a 30-minute drive from Mytilene; head inland from the main east-coast road and follow signs toward the village.

I still think about this place every single day! We traveled from Dallas, Tx and this is this BEST olive oil I've ever tasted in my life. We don't get quality olive oil in the United States. I bought 4 bottles, and I still haven't opened the black one! My husband gives me a hard time because I use the oil so sparingly and only put drizzle it over what I'm going to eat i don't share at all!! I want to make a special trip back to Lesvos to buy more oil, olive salt, olive spread, and soap!

Really great experience! The guided tour is really nice, I learned a lot about the touching story of their family business. Everything for only 5€, good value for money. They explain exactly all types of olive oils and how to taste it like a pro. Loved it

Excellent tour and tasting. Our guide coached us in evaluating olive oil quality, including aroma (fruitiness), back of mouth taste (bitterness), and swallow taste (pungency). Pairing with a couple of foods helped show the differences in oils tasted. Very enjoyable experience. Very good prices for good quality oil. Bought their dried olive salt which was portable and delicious!

A superbly informative and enlightening tour. You can book online or call. We arrived at 10:30am for the tour and were joined by just one couple. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative. Learned so much about the process for making olive oil and the history of the Protoulis business. As well as walking through the factory with new equipment, the original mill and presses from the old production were on display. There is opportunity for oil tasting and purchasing at the end of the tour. Highly recommend.

Highly recommend visiting this olive mill! We had a fantastic tour of the facilities, very informative and engaging. We learned a lot about how extra virgin olive oil is made, as well as tips on how to buy, taste, and store it properly. The olive oil itself is absolutely delicious, with a rich, fruity flavor. Definitely worth a visit, and don’t leave without picking up a few bottles!

We had an incredible experience at Protoulis Master Olive Oil Makers, thanks in large part to the exceptional hospitality and professionalism of Vlasios Nisiotis. I was able to book a tasting and tour for a group of 18 online, and from start to finish, Vlasios went above and beyond to make sure everything went smoothly. His email communication was clear, prompt, and thoughtful, and he followed up multiple times to ensure all of our needs and accommodations were being met. He even contacted our hotel to assist with transport options, which was a huge help since we were traveling from about an hour away. It was absolutely worth it! The tour was fascinating and eye-opening. We walked away with a much deeper appreciation for the incredible care, craftsmanship, and labor that goes into producing high quality olive oil. The facility also has a rich history, which made the visit even more meaningful. The highlight of the day was the olive oil tasting led by Vlasios himself. His knowledge and passion were inspiring, and we learned so much about how to evaluate olive oils by smell, taste, and quality. Everyone in our group ended up purchasing oil to bring home - it truly was that good! This was an unforgettable experience that combined education, tradition, and true Cretan hospitality. We highly recommend Protoulis to anyone visiting the area, and we can’t thank Vlasios Nisiotis enough for making it so special.

During the visit, we learned that the mill provides services to local farmers who can process their olives into oil there and can also resell the oil. In the shop at the mill you can taste various types of olive oil and make purchases, not only olive oil. I recommend buying olives, they are delicious (we had the opportunity to try them before buying them).

Lovely little olive oil factory and museum. Bit hard to find, but it is so very worth the effort to get here ! The people here are very friendly and take the time to show everything, answer all your questions, and even have a little tastery of all the various oils they make. And the quality really shows! It's tasty, smells delicious, and goes down smoothly. It's a bit of a drive to get there, but so very much worth the effort! 10/10
