About

Perched near the quiet village of Alyfada on the eastern shores of Lesvos, the Statue of Liberty is a local landmark in its own right — a gathering spot that has given this corner of the island a name visitors remember long after their trip. The boldly titled establishment carries a certain charm that comes from the contrast between its grand name and its relaxed, unhurried setting amid the olive groves and coastal calm of this less-touristed stretch of the island.

Stopping here offers a chance to step off the main routes and experience Lesvos as locals know it. Whether you pull in for a coffee, a cool drink, or a bite to eat, the place rewards visitors who take their time — the kind of stop where a quick refreshment can stretch into an afternoon of conversation and watching the rhythms of village life unfold. The surrounding area around Alyfada is peaceful and largely undiscovered, making the Statue of Liberty a useful and welcome waypoint for travelers exploring the island's interior or heading toward the Gulf of Gera.

For those touring Lesvos beyond the well-worn path between Mytilini and Molyvos, places like this are exactly what independent travel on the island is about. It offers a genuine taste of everyday Lesbian hospitality and serves as a good base for asking locals about hidden beaches, walking paths, or the best spots to find fresh fish in the area.

Before you go

What to expect

The name is bigger than the setting — and that contrast is the charm. A relaxed stopping point near the quiet neighbourhood of Alyfada where a coffee can easily stretch into a slow afternoon, with the unhurried rhythms of eastern Lesvos village life playing out around you. It is also a good place to ask locals about the hidden beaches, walking paths, and fresh-fish spots in the surrounding countryside.

Best time to visit

Late spring through early autumn suits a visit well; July and August are warm, but the unhurried pace makes it easy to linger in the shade.

How to get there

The Statue of Liberty sits just minutes from the centre of Mytilini, near the Alyfada neighbourhood on the eastern shore — close enough that it is reachable on foot from the harbour.

Nice little spot right next to the port, the statue is made of bronze and its base made of marble and was erected in 1930. Nice area for swimming, relaxing and away from busy streets.

Who would have guessed there was a Statue of Liberty in Lesvos. Nice statue by the water’s edge with group of locals nearby enjoying a cold water dip. Visited in August and it was quiet in this area. Benches nearby where locals were bathing where you can sit in the shade on a hot day. Photos aren’t great as it was a stormy day and hazy at the time - looked nicer in real life.

The view is nice. You can always find some Greek people there enjoying their snorkeling 🤿 Nice and quiet place to go for a swim. Some sitting places, a shower and dress room.

Just a statue with a little square. You can also watch the boats come and go from here.
