About

The Theophilos House Museum in Mytilini pays tribute to one of Greece's most beloved folk painters, Theophilos Hatzimihail, who was born on Lesvos around 1870 and spent much of his life wandering the island and mainland Greece, decorating taverns, shops, and homes in exchange for food and shelter. Largely self-taught, Theophilos developed a distinctive naive style filled with vibrant color and deep feeling, depicting scenes from Greek mythology, Byzantine history, the Greek War of Independence, and the rhythms of everyday rural life. His work was little recognized during his lifetime, and he lived in poverty, yet today he is celebrated as one of the great original voices in Greek visual art.

A visit to the museum offers an intimate window into the world that shaped this remarkable artist. Displays bring together biographical material, archival photographs, and works that illustrate his unique vision and the cultural landscape of Lesvos at the turn of the twentieth century. The museum's location in Mytilini, the island's bustling capital, makes it an easy and rewarding stop alongside a stroll through the city's neoclassical streets. It pairs naturally with a visit to the nearby Teriade Museum, which houses the celebrated collection of Theophilos paintings assembled by the Lesvos-born art publisher Stratis Eleftheriadis, who helped bring the painter posthumous international fame.
