About
Tucked away near the quiet village of Achladeri on the southern shores of Lesvos, o Nontas is the kind of traditional Greek seafood tavern that reminds you why you came to the Aegean in the first place. With its roots in the fishing and farming communities of this corner of the island, the tavern carries the unhurried spirit of local life — a place where meals are cooked with care, not haste, and where the catch of the day genuinely means what it says. The setting near the Gulf of Kalloni, one of the most productive fishing grounds in the Aegean, means the seafood here is as fresh as it gets anywhere on Lesvos.
Visitors can expect the honest pleasures of a proper Greek table: grilled fish brought in from local waters, octopus dried in the sun and charred over coals, fried calamari, and the briny simplicity of fresh mussels — the Gulf of Kalloni is particularly renowned for its mussels, farmed and harvested in its warm, sheltered waters for generations. These arrive alongside the expected companions of a Greek seafood meal: crusty bread, a sharp horiatiki salad, and a carafe of chilled local wine or ouzo that tastes exactly right in this heat and light.
What makes o Nontas worth seeking out is precisely what it does not try to be. There is no performance here, no tourist theatre — just the reliable warmth of Greek hospitality and food cooked the way it has always been cooked in villages like this one. For travellers exploring the less-visited south of Lesvos, or passing through on the way to the pine forests and beaches of the Achladeri area, it offers a genuine and deeply satisfying pause.
Before you go
What to expect
Sitting at o Nontas feels like being let in on a local secret — simple tables, the faint smell of charcoal and sea salt, and plates that arrive without ceremony but with genuine care. The mussels from the Gulf of Kalloni are the standout: plump, sweet, and farmed just minutes from your seat. It is the kind of meal that slows you down in the best possible way.
Best time to visit
Late spring through early autumn is ideal; May, June, and September offer the right warmth and far fewer visitors than July and August.
How to get there
From Mytilene, head west toward Kalloni and then follow signs south toward Achladeri — the drive takes roughly 35 to 45 minutes through quiet inland landscapes before you reach the Gulf's southern shore.

We keep returning here to eat because the food is so good, the setting is idyllic, and it's a little bit like going back in time. Very few photos of the food because when itarrives we cannot wait to begin eating it. Very fresh, high quality ingredients. We have had sardelles pastes, greens, Greek salad, kebab, skordalia, fried zucchini, fried sardines, and bread. The bread is grilled and served drizzled in olive oil with oregano. Heaven! Wonderful staff, very clean WC. Right on the water in Axladeria.

Head to this taverna for superb food at a reasonable price. We had the greek salad and the grilled octopus- both were delicious and perfectly done. The unexpected star of the show was the bread. As always this came without being requested and in some places it feels like an unwanted addition to the meal. The bread here was grilled and served in beautiful extra virgin olive oil. I could have eaten this on its own and been very happy. Thanks for a great lunch.

We had greek salad, Grilled calamary and shrimp saganaki and all was very delicious. We also liked Home made bread toasted and with Butter serves with food, was great. I guess better for lunch than dinner because Road is dark and Little complicated. But it was worth for coming :) recomended! There are only Meat and seafood, if you are complicated and picky, choose some other place. Here is friendly family restaurant :)

Great little tavern in a nice quiet part of the island. We stopped here for lunch and had an amazing grilled fish!! The food is super fresh and very homemade feel and taste. Super friendly staff! They speak English, and they even invited us back into the kitchen to show us what fresh fish they had for the day. High recommended if you’re in the area!

Called in as lunchtime & passing. Lady owner speaks English & showed us what fresh fish she had available. Shared a butterflied kefal fish, local to the bay, cooked on the grill with salad & homemade chips plus bread, beautiful!! One of the nicest lunches rounded off with white wine & water.

Wonderful location, there is nothing here but the taverna, virtually no traffic on the road. Tables under the veranda, nice and shady. Beautiful views across the gulf. They don't have a menu, they will tell you what they have, offering a choice of fish or meat. Every Greek taverna will have vegetarian choices because of the orthodox fast days. We had fish both times we ate there - really fresh and utterly gorgeous both times. Just about the best of the holiday.
