About
The Church of the Transfiguration of the Savior — Μεταμόρφωση του Σωτήρος in Greek — is dedicated to one of the most luminous events in the Christian calendar: the moment Christ appeared radiant before his disciples on Mount Tabor, revealing his divine nature. This feast day, celebrated on August 6th, marks one of the twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church and is observed with particular devotion across Lesvos, where village churches bearing this dedication draw worshippers and pilgrims from the surrounding communities for the annual panigiri.
Like many of Lesvos's rural churches, this whitewashed place of worship reflects the vernacular ecclesiastical architecture of the eastern Aegean, characterized by its modest scale, stone construction, and the warm interior atmosphere typical of Greek Orthodox sacred spaces. Inside, an iconostasis separates the nave from the sanctuary, adorned with icons that anchor the spiritual life of local families across generations. The church serves not only as a place of liturgy but as a focal point for community memory — baptisms, weddings, and memorial services woven into its walls over many decades.
Visitors who happen upon this church during their exploration of Lesvos's countryside will find it emblematic of the island's deeply rooted Orthodox faith. Even outside of feast days, the building offers a moment of quiet reflection and a window into the religious landscape that has shaped Lesbian village life for centuries. On August 6th, the celebration of the Transfiguration transforms the surrounding area into a gathering of local tradition, with the liturgy followed by festivities that blend the sacred and the communal in the timeless Greek way.
Before you go
What to expect
The church sits quietly just outside Mytilene, its whitewashed walls and modest scale marking it as a typical eastern Aegean Orthodox place of worship. Step inside and the cool, dim interior reveals an iconostasis glowing with devotional icons — a space where local families have marked baptisms, weddings, and memorial services for generations. The atmosphere shifts entirely on August 6th, when the feast of the Transfiguration draws worshippers from surrounding communities for the liturgy and the communal panigiri that follows.
Best time to visit
August 6th, the feast of the Transfiguration, is when this church comes fully alive; at other times, late spring and early autumn bring mild weather and a quieter atmosphere for reflection.
How to get there
The church is barely a kilometre and a half from central Mytilene — close enough to reach on foot or in just a few minutes by car.

Our neighbor, the Greek government, should keep its word and restore the mosques on the island as soon as possible. The Turkish government kept its word and restored dozens of churches, including Greek scientists in the teams. For years, you left those beautiful historical artifacts on the island to destruction/looting. It's a great pity. Don't be afraid to restore those artifacts; they are a treasure...
