About
Perched in the quiet coastal village of Vareia, just a short drive south of Mytilini along the eastern shore of Lesvos, Vigla Hotel occupies a setting that blends the calm of village life with easy access to the island's vibrant capital. Vareia itself carries a quiet cultural weight as the birthplace of the celebrated naïve painter Theophilos Hatzimihail, and the surrounding landscape of olive groves sloping toward the Aegean sets a distinctly Lesbian tone from the moment you arrive. The hotel's name, Vigla, meaning watchtower or lookout in Greek, hints at the elevated vantage the property offers over the shimmering straits between Lesvos and the Turkish coast.
Guests at Vigla can expect the warmth and attentiveness characteristic of family-run Greek hospitality, with comfortable accommodations that serve both leisure travelers and those using Mytilini as a hub for exploring the wider island. The proximity to the capital means that the fish tavernas, ferry terminal, markets, and cultural sites of Mytilini are all within easy reach, while returning to Vareia in the evening offers a welcome retreat from the bustle. Whether you are beginning a longer journey through the villages of Lesvos or simply need a well-located base from which to discover the island's olive oil trails, birdwatching wetlands, and medieval castles, Vigla Hotel provides a grounded, authentically Greek place to rest your feet at the end of the day.
Before you go
What to expect
Vigla sits above the narrow strait between Lesvos and the Turkish coast, in the small village of Vareia where the naïve painter Theophilos was born. The atmosphere is genuinely quiet — olive groves, a coastal road, and the distant shimmer of Anatolia across the water. Family-run hospitality means you are likely to get honest local tips over breakfast rather than a laminated tourist leaflet.
Best time to visit
Spring and early autumn are ideal for comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds; summer stays lively given the close proximity to Mytilene.
How to get there
Vareia is roughly 4 km south of Mytilene along the eastern coast road, an easy 10-minute drive or short taxi ride from the port and city centre.

Essentially a new hotel, after a radical renovation. Close to the airport and the city. Easy parking. Very nice and clean room. Full breakfast. The best thing of course was the service from the staff. Perfect, like being at home. Panagiotis and Alexandra, thank you very much.

The hotel was wonderful, very good location, clean and the room was very large with a very nice breakfast. Mrs. Vasileia offered us the freshest and most delicious cookies and the most beautiful pancakes made with a lot of love. The staff was impeccable. All the children were very kind and willing to serve us with kindness and courtesy. We highly recommend it, you will have a wonderful time.

Mytilene is a very charming and beautiful hotel, the rooms are very clean and comfortable. We didn't eat dinner there, we had seafood and enjoyed ourselves at the tavern at night.
