An excellent museum with some unique exhibits like the mosaics from a Roman villa of Hellenistic times. And if you can get Ismene to be your guide, you will enjoy it even more!
Very fascinating look at the history of Lesvos and Mytilene. The restored mosaic floors and the replica kitchen were my highlights. If you appreciate Roman artifacts I would recommend going
About
The Archaeological Museum of Mytilene stands as one of the finest repositories of ancient history in the North Aegean, housing finds that span thousands of years of human habitation on Lesvos. The museum's collection draws from excavations across the island, presenting artifacts from the prehistoric, archaic, classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods. Highlights include intricate mosaic floors rescued from ancient Roman villas, classical sculpture, ceramics, coins, and funerary objects that paint a vivid portrait of daily life in antiquity. The mosaics in particular are remarkable — vibrant, well-preserved scenes that once adorned the floors of wealthy households and speak to the island's prosperity during the Roman era.
Visitors stepping inside will find the exhibits thoughtfully organized, offering a coherent journey through Lesvos's layered past. The collections underscore the island's significance as a crossroads of Aegean civilization, a place that nurtured the poet Sappho and the philosopher Theophrastus, and served as an important port and cultural center throughout antiquity. Inscriptions, votive offerings, and everyday domestic objects complement the grander pieces, grounding the history in the lives of ordinary islanders rather than just the powerful elite.
For anyone traveling through Mytilene, the island's capital, a visit to the Archaeological Museum is an essential complement to wandering the city's Byzantine castle and Ottoman-era streets. It provides the deep historical framework that makes exploring Lesvos feel layered and meaningful, transforming a beautiful island holiday into something richer. The museum is modest in scale but generous in the quality and significance of what it preserves, making it genuinely rewarding for curious travelers with even a passing interest in the ancient world.
Before you go
What to expect
The Roman mosaic floors are the unmissable centrepiece — large, brilliantly coloured panels lifted from ancient villa floors that make you stop and stare. The rest of the collection moves chronologically from prehistoric finds through coins, sculpture, and everyday ceramics, giving Lesvos's long past a human scale rather than a monumental one.
Best time to visit
Open year-round; April through June and September are ideal — fewer visitors and comfortable temperatures for exploring Mytilene on foot before or after.
How to get there
The museum sits in central Mytilene, a short walk from the harbour waterfront and the Byzantine castle; from the ferry terminal it is around ten to fifteen minutes on foot.

Fantastic mosaiacs and some interesting objects. Random non sequential jumbling of item numbers and text contributed to it being a bit inaccessible. As with so many museums, would benefit from a rewrite of the narratives for brevity and clarity together with placing the objects in the broader historical and geopolitical forces that shaped this beautiful island over the millenia.

really beautiful collection!! so fascinating to see the recreations of the buildings and architecture they had collected mosaics from, and you can even walk on them (on protected glass) to full explore the size and magnitude of the art!! really cool place to visit

The museum will be interesting for people who like history and archeology. The museum has many artifacts that were excavated on the island, it is interesting to walk and read, comparing it with history. The entrance cost 4 euros, the employees are polite, but it was a little uncomfortable when they followed you and talked to each other. It would be much more valuable if the museum had tours or stories about the history. If you have no alternative to occupy yourself in the city, you can visit this museum.

It is a beautiful museum with very interesting excibits. The museum closes at 15:30. I got in at 14:20. At about 15:00 ... the personnel .... hmm .... let's just say that the way they moved around and talked to each other made me feel uncomfortable and not welcome. 5 stars for the excibits and the presentation.

The location of the museum is so close to Ferries. We walked all the way there but be careful on sunny days. It may be hot, wear your hat. The museum is so close to a park and a beach. If you have swimsuits with you, you may swim. When you get in there, there is a small reception on the left. If you don’t want to carry your backpack with you, there are locked wardrobes. It looks like museum is a calm place and few people visits there but valuable. There is always a lady directs you during the trip. Rooms are little bit complicated but someone helps, no worries. I had almost 100 photos, the system doesn’t let me upload all. I may try it later. Anyway, the museum is cool, I enjoyed it. I hope you can also like it. Enjoy your trip!

If you like mosaics you should check it out. We were really impressed with how they transferred and restored these detailed pieces. They also had a display of mosaics made by local children, which was super cute.
