I went to pick up a framed picture today and they didn’t make me act up, since the service was great and the staff very helpful. The Portrait was undamaged and handed to me directly. A little tip if you need anything go to a young, pretty man that goes by the name of Thanos.

About

Ellinika Tachydromeia, known throughout Greece by its familiar acronym ELTA, is the national postal service and a reliable anchor of everyday life in the communities of Lesvos. The branch serving the Alyfada area provides the essential postal and courier services that connect this quiet corner of the island to the rest of Greece and the wider world — from sending postcards home to receiving packages and handling basic financial transactions that ELTA offices across the country traditionally offer.

For visitors, a stop at the local ELTA can be one of those quietly satisfying travel rituals: posting a handwritten card from a small Greek village carries a charm that digital messages simply cannot replicate. The staff at rural post offices on Lesvos tend to be helpful and accustomed to assisting travellers, making it a practical and unexpectedly pleasant errand. Whether you need stamps, want to send a parcel, or simply need to sort out a delivery, this is the place to go in the Alyfada vicinity.

Beyond the practical, ELTA offices serve as a small window into the rhythms of Greek island life. Locals stopping in to collect mail or pay bills, brief conversations across the counter, the unhurried pace of a rural branch — it all adds texture to a visit. If you are spending time exploring the villages and coastline of this part of Lesvos, tucking a few postcards and a visit to the post office into your itinerary is a simple way to leave a tangible trace of your journey on the island.

Before you go

What to expect

Stepping into this branch of Greece's national postal service feels like a brief immersion in the workday rhythm of Mytilini — locals paying bills, collecting parcels, and exchanging a few words with the staff across the counter. The pace is unhurried, and the staff are accustomed to helping visitors buy stamps or send a postcard abroad. Leaving the island with a handwritten card in the mail is a small but satisfying ritual that no app quite replaces.

Best time to visit

Open year-round; weekday mornings are typically the quietest time to visit.

How to get there

The branch is within Mytilini town itself, well within walking distance of the harbour and the central square — no car needed from most accommodation in the town centre.

They are late and many times the letters never arrive. Employees are incredibly bored. Honestly, there is no reason for them to exist.

They don't answer the phone normally... I was waiting for a card from Piraeus and of course they didn't bring it for 1 month. And finally it came to another neighbor's house.... Imagine if they stole our cards too because you are irresponsible..

The worst thing is that the employees don't want to do their job. The other day, a person close to me was waiting for a card from the bank and the post office lost it, which ended up with someone else taking it and trying to access the account, meaning zero responsibility, they don't want to cooperate there, so what do you have open? To make people's lives difficult.

Why do we pay for parcels to be delivered by the postman to the recipient's door??? It's +50% on the price and a message comes to the mobile phone saying come and pick it up. They don't answer the phones at all. They are only there for bills, nothing else.

They don't even pick up the phone for fun and don't inform us that the package has arrived on the island. We have to smell our nails every time.

For the past hour and a half, I've been calling to ask: how many days does it take for a simple letter to arrive from Athens, as it's already been 7 since they sent it to me and no one is there to answer. I keep ringing and they don't answer. I've never seen such indifference before...anywhere! The most unacceptable of the unacceptable! What exactly are they doing? What are they after?

At all the counters except 6 there is a sign above "All services except parcels" One can easily assume that they cannot even receive a parcel, therefore there may be a misunderstanding with the short-tempered dark-haired lady at counter 6. Otherwise, another public company with employees who are not afraid for their position. Of the many times I have had to receive an order from Elta, and there are quite a few, only 1 was brought to my house, maybe the postman had come for his coffee or had personal business in the area and said to make a delivery. The good thing is that they send messages to the mobile if a letter or parcel has arrived. They also take the phone every now and then. They never answer when you pick up.

I tell him no, he tells me no neighbors? I say no I don't know anyone here Entometaxis I've moved here 4 months in the apartment, he tells me where his house is I explain where it is and to call me when he gets on the street to go out, I've been waiting all day NO ONE EVER CAME Of course I'll talk to the central office too!

Like any other post office, sometimes you wait a long time and other times not.
