I participated in the seminar on basic life support for children and infants. It was very organized, interesting and comprehensive. The instructors were excellently qualified and generously shared their knowledge and experience with us!
All the children are better than the others. They are knowledgeable about the subject and with absolute seriousness and responsibility. I feel great joy that I met them and we worked together!!
About
The Hellenic Rescue Team Branch of Lesvos is a volunteer search and rescue organization operating on one of the Aegean's most strategically significant islands. Situated near the village of Alyfada in the eastern part of Lesvos, this branch forms part of the nationwide Hellenic Rescue Team network, a highly trained volunteer corps dedicated to mountain rescue, maritime operations, and emergency response across Greece. The team's members undergo rigorous training in first aid, rope techniques, and sea rescue, standing ready to respond to emergencies across Lesvos's varied and often challenging terrain, from its rugged mountain trails to its extensive coastline.
Lesvos's geographic position in the northeastern Aegean, just a few kilometers from the Turkish coast at its closest point, has placed this branch at the forefront of some of the most demanding humanitarian and rescue operations in recent European history. The island became a major point of arrival during periods of intense refugee and migrant crossings, and local rescue volunteers worked alongside international organizations in life-saving efforts at sea. This context gives the branch a significance that extends well beyond routine emergency services, reflecting a deep civic commitment among its members to human welfare under extraordinary circumstances.
For visitors, this is not a conventional tourist stop, but those with an interest in civil society, volunteerism, or the human geography of the Aegean may find value in understanding the role such organizations play in island life. Hikers and outdoor enthusiasts venturing into the island's less-traveled interior or coastline can also take reassurance in knowing that a trained and dedicated rescue presence operates here. The branch stands as a quiet reminder of the resilience and solidarity that characterize communities on this remarkable island.
Before you go
What to expect
This is a working volunteer rescue organization, not a visitor attraction — the team responds to mountain emergencies and maritime incidents across Lesvos throughout the year. For those drawn to the human side of island life, knowing this branch operates here adds meaningful context to how a community has responded to extraordinary events on one of the Aegean's most consequential sea crossings. Hikers heading into the island's rugged interior can take quiet reassurance from its presence.
Best time to visit
The team operates year-round; Lesvos itself is most comfortable to visit between April and October.
How to get there
The branch is in Mytilene, the island's main town, within easy walking or driving distance of the port and town center.
