About
Tucked into the quiet landscape near the village of Alyfada in the heart of Lesvos, Mountzouris John is one of those unassuming local establishments that travelers who venture off the main tourist trail are fortunate to discover. The surrounding countryside here is characteristic of the island's interior — rolling hills draped in olive groves, the air carrying the scent of wild herbs, and a pace of life that feels genuinely unhurried. A place bearing a family name in this part of Greece is almost always a sign of deep local roots, and that personal connection shapes everything about the experience.
Whether stopping in for refreshment, a bite to eat, or simply to pick up something local, visitors will find the kind of straightforward hospitality that defines rural Lesvos. The island's tradition of welcoming strangers warmly — a legacy stretching back through centuries of trade and exchange across the Aegean — is alive and well in establishments like this one. Conversations flow easily, and locals are often generous with recommendations about the surrounding area, from hidden footpaths to the best times to visit nearby spots.
For travelers exploring the less-visited villages and landscapes of central and northern Lesvos, Mountzouris John serves as a useful and genuine waypoint. It is the kind of place that does not advertise itself loudly but earns its place on the map through steady, unpretentious service to the community and to curious visitors who appreciate authenticity over spectacle.
Before you go
What to expect
A neighbourhood spot bearing a family name, the kind of place locals stop at without a second thought. Expect a simple, no-fuss atmosphere — the particular warmth of someone who has been running the same place for years. The surrounding streets of Mytilene give it an everyday, lived-in feel rather than a tourist-facing one.
Best time to visit
Likely open year-round; summer brings more passing visitors, but the regular local clientele keeps the character honest.
How to get there
It sits within Mytilene town itself, just a short walk from the waterfront — easily reached on foot from the harbour or the central bus station.

I have ordered an aquarium accessory online a month and a half ago and have not received anything or any updates. I called him to see where my order is and he replied that he does not have it and does not know when he will have it. I told him to cancel the order and refund the money, but still no action has been taken. The amount is 8.5 euros with shipping, he probably needed it to get through Easter. He is that poor.

He needs to learn to be professional in all the years he's been in the shop. He can't just sell you food for a different animal than the one you asked for and tell you that he's doing his job too.

I had a parrot that I used to feed with cream because it was small. So I went to get food from there and he gave me canary food, which they don't make for parrots. The point is not that he was wrong, but that I went to tell him and he wouldn't admit it, he even told me that it was one of the best foods... The parrot didn't live and for that reason I won't go there again.
