I had the most delicious and healthy breakfast, with olive tapenade, honey, tahin (sesamy paste), and olive oil. The place has a lot of character and an authentic cosy decoration.
About
Tucked away near the quiet village of Alyfada in the heart of Lesvos, Mousiko Kafeneio — the Musical Café — embodies the soul of the Greek kafeneio tradition with an added layer of artistic warmth. The kafeneio has long been the beating heart of village life across Greece, a place where locals gather not merely for coffee but for conversation, debate, and the slow pleasures of unhurried time. Here, that timeless institution finds expression through music, creating a space where the sounds of the bouzouki or guitar might drift out into the afternoon air alongside the scent of Greek coffee and the clink of small glasses.
Visitors can expect the full sensory embrace of an authentic village café: strong Greek coffee served in the traditional way, perhaps a tsipouro or local wine, and the kind of unhurried hospitality that feels increasingly rare. The musical character of the place means evenings can take on a particularly lively atmosphere, with live performances or simply a soundtrack that reflects the rich musical heritage of the Aegean. Lesvos has deep roots in Greek folk music tradition, and a place like this serves as a living vessel for that culture rather than a mere tourist recreation of it.
For the traveler venturing off the beaten path through the inland villages of Lesvos, Mousiko Kafeneio offers something genuinely valuable — a chance to sit among locals, absorb the rhythms of everyday island life, and experience the island not as a backdrop but as a living community. Whether you stop in for a mid-afternoon coffee break between exploring the surrounding countryside or linger into the evening when the atmosphere deepens, this is the kind of place that tends to become the unexpected highlight of a trip.
Before you go
What to expect
The mingled scent of Greek coffee and tsipouro greets you at the door, while regulars fill the chairs with conversation that shows no sign of hurrying anywhere. Evenings here shift register — live bouzouki or guitar can quietly transform a coffee stop into something you find yourself reluctant to leave. It sits at that comfortable crossroads between café, social club, and impromptu concert hall.
Best time to visit
Open year-round, but evenings from late spring through autumn draw the liveliest musical atmosphere.
How to get there
Mousiko Kafeneio is right in central Mytilene, an easy walk from the harbor or the main square — no car needed.

This place is unique in Mytilene. It’s situated in an Art Deco building and the interior does not compromise. It recalls memories of student Paris. But it manages well to satisfy today’s clientele being it with afternoon Cafes/ Teas and hot Chocolate or evening cocktails accompanying lunch ve music performances. Just a lovely place to stop with friends for a relaxed chat or watch outside life go by.

We came here every morning for breakfast since it was the place our hotel was partnered with. Overall, the ambiance and location are very nice, but the service is quite weak. Everything comes very slowly, and the food we ordered doesn’t look like it does in the pictures. For example, while expecting bread with avocado spread and tomato on top, what we got was avocado on the side with a separate tomato toast. The coffee is quite bitter, so you might want to consider alternatives, but the atmosphere itself is beautiful. When having breakfast, any extra item you request either doesn’t arrive or comes close to the end of breakfast time, so it’s better to order everything at once—though it will still come late. The staff are friendly and smiling, other than that I don’t have much else to say.

In Lesvos Mytilini we had breakfast in Mousiko Kafeneio. We tried Bruschetta Avakado, Croissant with gruyere cheese pesto tomato grated pistachios, Mousiko Koulouri and Country breakfast. All were tasty but especially croissant was very good. And the coffee, americano was so good coffee. Cozy atmosphere and polite service.

Fresh and toasted bread was amazing and with some good cheese and marmalade. Everything was fresh and with good quality ingredients and the staff were super nice. Got a table on the side of the road, it was nice to have a bite and take a look around the street.

The ambiance was very nostalgic, it is also very pleasant to sit outside if you find a place. The breakfast options are very nice and varied. The staff is very friendly. We had bruschetta with avocado and boiled egg and a sandwich with pesto sauce, tomato and edam cheese. We had coffee with it. Everything we ate was delicious.

Nice selection of brunches and juices. Highlight was the power juice. Very fresh. Brunches we tried (croissant, Toast and bagels) were ok, not something remarkable. The place is nicely located in a side street but the traffic and noise from motorbikes made it difficult to enjoy the otherwise pleasurable atmosphere. Service was friendly but very very slow.

A very nice and hospitable cafe, which serves a truly excellent breakfast for people like me, coming off the ferry tired and hungry. Most ingredients are from the island itself. Staff is happy to tell you all about the provenance. The bread is fresh and crunchy, too. In the afternoon, I had a good local white wine here as well. Add to this the relaxed atmosphere and the nice decoration with old gramophones etc and I would say Mousiko Kafeneio is the perfect spot for any visitor of Mytilini!

Artsy coffee shop near the port or Mytilene. Had a croissant filled with tahini, honey and banana along with sliced bread with avocado and carrot chutney. DE-LI-CIOUS. Coffee made with Kawa blend is AMAZING. So stoked with this place. Highly recommended.
