Visitors say
A lovely cafe nestled under trees resembling our tea gardens in Lesbos. Ideal for rest and relaxation. It's quieter than other places. The lokma dessert is a must-try.
Mytilene is a nice place to go while it is still pure without the hordes of northern barbarians.
About
Palaio Dimarcheio, whose name simply means "Old Town Hall," carries within its walls the civic memory of the surrounding community near Alyfada. Buildings like this once served as the beating administrative heart of rural Greek life, where local affairs were settled, decisions were made, and the rhythms of village governance played out across generations. The architecture typical of such structures reflects the dignified, no-nonsense character of the Aegean interior, built to last and to matter.
Today, repurposed and welcoming, Palaio Dimarcheio offers visitors a chance to step into a space where history and everyday life intersect in the unhurried way that defines the best of Lesvos. Whether you stop in for a coffee, a meal, or simply to absorb the atmosphere, the setting carries an authenticity that newer establishments cannot manufacture. The thick walls, the proportions of the rooms, and the sense of accumulated time give any visit a quiet resonance.
For travellers exploring the quieter inland and coastal villages of Lesvos beyond the well-trodden path to Mytilene or Molyvos, a stop at Palaio Dimarcheio is a reminder that the island's character is most honestly encountered in places like this, where a historic building has been given a second life without losing its soul.
Before you go
What to expect
The thick stone walls and high-ceilinged rooms hold a cool stillness that makes it easy to slow down over a coffee or a meal. You're sitting inside what was once the civic centre of the local community, and that weight of purpose is still faintly present — the space feels dignified rather than decorated. It's the kind of stop that grounds a Mytilini afternoon without demanding anything of you.
Best time to visit
Open year-round in central Mytilini; spring and autumn bring the most comfortable temperatures, while summer is lively but can be warm inside older stone buildings.
How to get there
Palaio Dimarcheio is about 400 metres from the centre of Mytilene, well within easy walking distance from the harbour or main square.

They've screwed all the taps shut. THERE ARE NO TOILETS ON THE ISLAND. DON'T COME IF YOU HAVE DIARRHEA. MOST SHOPS WON'T LET YOU USE THE TOILET EVEN IF YOU PAY, EXCEPT FOR CAFES AND RESTAURANTS.

Closed for a long time after the earthquake three years ago, difficult to visit from the inside. At one time, civil weddings took place there and it was the office of the municipal council.
