Agios Fokas Beach
Visitors say
The atmosphere is calm and welcoming, with stone beach and clear water that make it the perfect place to relax. The view is stunning, especially at sunset, and the beach is well-maintained and clean.
Water crystal clear, some fish in the sea to view with your snorkel, water temp slightly cooler than another places at 23c, but still very comfortable, food and drinks service and free wifi. What more could you want to relax with at a beach.
About this Beach
Agios Fokas Beach lies on the southeastern coast of Lesvos, just a short drive from the island's capital Mytilene, making it a favourite escape for locals seeking a peaceful stretch of shore without venturing far from the city. The beach is composed of small, smooth pebbles and coarse dark sand, characteristic of this volcanic coastline, and the water here is notably clear and calm, sheltered enough to make it suitable for swimmers of all abilities. The sea takes on deep shades of turquoise and sapphire depending on the light, and the relatively shallow entry makes it welcoming for families with young children.
The setting is unpretentious and relaxed, with the small fishing community of Agios Fokas lending the place an authentically local character that larger resort beaches on the island tend to lack. Facilities are modest — a taverna or two nearby where you can eat fresh fish pulled from these very waters — but the beach itself is largely natural and uncommercialized. Shade is limited, so bringing your own umbrella is advisable during the height of summer. The surrounding landscape of low scrub and rocky hillside gives the spot a raw, elemental quality that rewards those who appreciate nature over amenity.
The best time to visit is late spring or early autumn, when the Aegean heat is gentler, the crowds are thin, and the water has warmed enough for comfortable swimming. In July and August the meltemi wind can pick up along this coast, which keeps the temperature bearable but occasionally roughens the sea. Agios Fokas Beach will not appear in glossy holiday brochures, and that is precisely its appeal — a genuine slice of everyday Lesbian coastal life, where the pace is slow, the fish is fresh, and the horizon stretches uninterrupted toward the coast of Turkey just a few kilometres to the east.
Before you go
What to expect
The volcanic pebbles and dark coarse sand give Agios Fokas a pleasingly rough texture underfoot that signals immediately you are not on a resort beach. A taverna or two by the shore serves fish from the same small boats moored a few metres away, and on a clear day the Turkish coastline is visible across the strait, lending an unexpected sense of geography to an otherwise quietly domestic spot. The water stays sheltered and transparent well into the shallows, making it easy to wade in gradually.
Best time to visit
Late May through June and again in early September hit the sweet spot — the sea is warm enough to swim, crowds are thin, and the meltemi wind that can rough up the water in July and August has yet to assert itself.
How to get there
From Mytilene, follow the road south along the eastern coast toward the village of Agios Fokas; on winding island roads the drive takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour.

Amazing little beach! Very-very clear water but it can be a little cold. Pebbly beach so water shoes are needed! Great for snorkeling especially near the bigger rocks - loads of fish. There are some sun beds - half are reserved for hotel quests but the rest are for public use. Can be quite expensive 30 euros for two, but you get great service, a cold bottle of water in ice tub, a drink (coffee or beer) and a towel for that money. It is very relaxing and quiet as well.

We have been to Agios Fokas beach many times over the years. This year they had renovated the hotel and parts of their beach environment, even though we didn't stay there. It's a calm and relaxing place. The water is crystal clear and the staff are friendly. The only thing to consider is that the beach consists of small or medium sized stones. But that is also the reason for the clear water. Definitely worth to spend a day in the sun here!

Great beach, worth a visit. The sunbeds to be hired to non-hotel guests are limited, so you should be lucky to find one. Still the atmosphere and food was great

Went to Agios Fokas yesterday. There is a fabulous new bar there that is part of the hotel. Sunbeds are very comfortable and are free as long as you eat/drink something. The service was excellent and the food was nice and not crazy prices. The beach is a mixture of dark sand/pebbles. We love snorkeling and this was a great spot for it as the water was crystal clear and swimming around the rocks we saw hundreds of fish!

What a fantastic place! It's beautiful, cozy, comfortable and by the warm welcome and the hospitality you can really tell it's a family business where "feeling at home" is important. I would love to visit again whenever I am in KOS
