DOY Mytilene
About
DOY Mytilene — the local branch of Greece's public tax authority, known in Greek as the Δημόσια Οικονομική Υπηρεσία — serves as the primary administrative office for tax and financial matters on the island of Lesvos. Located in the Alyfada area on the outskirts of Mytilene, the island's capital, it handles the full range of public revenue services including income tax filings, VAT registration, property declarations, and the issuance of tax identification numbers for residents and businesses alike.
For visitors to Lesvos, this office becomes relevant in a number of practical situations. Entrepreneurs looking to establish a business on the island, foreign nationals seeking a Greek tax number (AFM) for property purchases or long-term residency, and seasonal workers formalising their employment status will all find themselves passing through its doors at some point. The office operates during standard Greek public service hours on weekdays, and it is advisable to arrive early or book an appointment through the government's online portal to avoid lengthy queues, particularly during peak filing periods in spring and autumn.
While DOY Mytilene may lack the scenic appeal of the island's olive groves or thermal springs, it represents an essential touchpoint for anyone putting down roots — however temporarily — on Lesvos. The staff are accustomed to assisting non-Greek speakers navigating administrative processes, and having your documents organised in advance, including a valid passport, proof of address, and any relevant financial paperwork, will make the visit considerably smoother.
Before you go
What to expect
A functional government office where residents, foreign nationals, and entrepreneurs come to handle tax registrations, AFM numbers, and financial filings. The atmosphere is typical of Greek public administration — take a number, wait your turn, and come prepared with your paperwork in order. Staff are generally accustomed to helping non-Greek speakers navigate the process.
Best time to visit
Weekday mornings are your best bet; avoid the busy spring and autumn filing seasons if your errand is flexible.
How to get there
The office is in the Alyfada area on the edge of Mytilene, a short drive or taxi ride from the town centre. From the port, expect around five to ten minutes by car.

I must admit that to my great surprise, after submitting a request through the AADE to this particular Tax Office on the 2nd day of the year, a very kind employee called me that day and settled my request the same day. Of course, I tried by phone and they did not answer… I understand all the negative comments that have been posted and the expectations from a public service were not high anyway, but the handling by this particular employee pleasantly surprised me and deserves all 5 stars.

The arrogance and style of a thousand cardinals, as if the service is their domain, they don't want to serve!!

Employees who don't strike are paid and don't serve by stepping on the general strike, the most despicable system there is, they even made the tax office their shop... Old OSE like a 60 year old stationmaster, this is Greece, gentlemen.

Unacceptable and unfriendly behavior towards any citizen, they are simply looking to pass their time without having the will to serve and for their wrongdoings when you force them, they only know how to say that the legislator is coming! Helladistan 2022!

People live 100 years back, I lost 5 hours of my life. They smoke, they don't serve and they just sit around to get a pension. Now I understand why they call us jerks.

If I had the chance, I would give it a -5. The phones are constantly down. Those who are far away cannot be served. I applied for a document that I needed and it was served after 25 days. Rude, indifferent. By far the most problematic tax office.

We waited 12 weeks for a tax refund from Lesvos. Phones are not answered. It's like they don't care. Terrible

Unacceptable service, phones pretend not to be answered, rude staff and security staff too. Shame.

No service is offered via telephone! The taxpayer who is unable to visit the Service is despised! The situation is unacceptable, apparently due to a lack of staff. However, only the citizen is ultimately the loser.
