About
Tucked into the quiet village of Vareia, just a few kilometres south of Mytilene, the Museum of Theophilos stands as a tribute to one of Greece's most beloved and singular folk painters. Theophilos Hatzimihail was born in Mytilene in 1870 and spent much of his extraordinary life wandering the Aegean world, covering walls, taverna interiors, and any surface he could find with vivid scenes drawn from Greek mythology, Byzantine history, and the rhythms of everyday island life. Often impoverished and misunderstood in his own time, he painted with an urgency and imagination that later generations would come to regard as the purest expression of a vernacular Greek artistic spirit. The museum preserves a focused collection of his paintings, allowing visitors to encounter the full warmth and narrative ambition of his work in an intimate, unhurried setting.
What makes a visit here especially resonant is the human story behind the art. Theophilos was championed by Stratis Eleftheriadis, better known as Tériade, the Lesvos-born art publisher and critic who made his name in Paris and counted Picasso, Matisse, and Chagall among his collaborators. It was Tériade who recognised the profound originality in Theophilos's folk canvases and worked to bring them to wider attention, and the Tériade Museum sits only steps away, making Vareia a remarkable double destination for lovers of art. The two collections together tell a story of cultural bridges built between a remote Aegean island and the heart of twentieth-century European modernism.
Visitors to the Museum of Theophilos will find paintings that pulse with colour and storytelling — heroes in armour, fishermen hauling nets, landscapes unmistakably shaped by the light of Lesvos. The setting in Vareia, a gentle village of olive groves and traditional architecture, perfectly complements the unhurried spirit of the collection. For anyone travelling to Mytilene, this museum offers something rarer than spectacle: a genuine encounter with a singular artistic vision rooted deeply in the soil and mythology of this island.
Before you go
What to expect
The rooms are small and the paintings hang close — vivid scenes of armoured heroes, fishermen, and Aegean landscapes rendered in a style that feels both archaic and urgently alive. Most visitors linger in front of individual canvases far longer than expected, drawn into Theophilos's restless storytelling. The intimacy of the space makes the encounter feel personal rather than monumental.
Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are ideal; summer crowds here are lighter than at the major sites, and the short drive from Mytilene makes it an easy half-morning at any time of year.
How to get there
Vareia is a short drive south from Mytilene, roughly 10–15 minutes along the coastal road. The Tériade Museum is within easy walking distance, so the two collections make a natural pairing in a single visit.

A nice little but quite complete museum of a great painter. If you like the simple but imaginative art of Theofilos then this museum will provide the overview of his steps in art. The personnel is very helpful and friendly and they will help with most questions you may have

Even if the museum is quite small, its beauty is really big. The paintings take you back to the years when the artist was growing up, getting a glimpse of the every day life of that time. The biography of Theophilos convey a nice message … your uniqueness may be misunderstood and yet recognized as a wonderful gift by the right person. The colors of the paintings were beautiful and nicely portrayed.

I went to the museum once and tried to take my visitors later but it was closed! The museum closed on a Saturday morning! When are you operating it!? The place can be better arranged and maintained. The beautiful artwork can be demonstrated to the public in a more organised manner!

A collection of paintings from Theofilos, a man that was born in the island of Lesvos more than a century ago. A simple man that dedicated his life to paint mainly historical figures of Greece throughout the centuries and pass their myths to his fellow citizens. His forms are inspired by the paintings of the orthodox churches. He lived a difficult life but was happy enough to see that his talent was recognized a few years before his death.

HIGHLY recommended to visit this popular, extremely talented and pioneer of his era, Greek artist named Theophilos Kefalas. A huge range of his works are exhibited, totally worth the €3 entrance fee.
