About

In the quiet village of Alyfada, the zacharoplastis — the traditional Greek pastry shop — stands as one of the most beloved institutions of Greek daily life, and this local establishment carries on that sweet tradition with genuine village character. The word zacharoplastis itself speaks to an old craft, the art of the sugar sculptor, and a well-run shop of this kind is the heart of its community, the place where locals gather for a mid-morning coffee, a cold spoon sweet, or a slice of semolina cake soaked in syrup.

Visitors stopping here can expect the comforting rhythms of a proper Greek kafezacharoplastio: glass cases displaying baklava glistening with honey, custard-filled bougatsa dusted with powdered sugar, kourambiedes, and whatever seasonal specialties the house makes its own. Pair any of these with a thick Greek coffee or a tall frappe and you have the essential Aegean afternoon. The setting in Alyfada, a village that sits away from the island's tourist circuit, means the clientele is largely local, which gives the experience an authenticity that is harder to find in the busier coastal towns.

For travelers exploring the inland villages of Lesvos or passing through on the road between the island's larger centers, a stop at a village zacharoplastis like this one is a small but memorable pleasure. It is a chance to slow down, practice a few words of Greek with the owner, and taste something made the way it has always been made — not for tourists, but for the people who live here.

Before you go

What to expect

The glass counter is the main event — trays of syrup-soaked baklava, warm bougatsa dusted with powdered sugar, and kourambiedes stacked beside whatever the house is making that day. Regulars claim their table for a mid-morning coffee and linger without apology. This is Mytilini at its most unhurried and most itself.

Best time to visit

Open year-round; mornings are liveliest when the pastries are freshest and locals stop in before the day takes hold.

How to get there

The shop sits in central Mytilini, a short walk from the waterfront — no car needed, and parking is beside the point.

It’s a very elegant and chic patisserie. We ate profiterol and another desert made of vanilla pudding and red fruit. They are both very tasty and delicious 😋 I can come to island just for this.

Amazing place!!!! We are excited! It was like we visited home of a hospitable family. Desserts were extremely delicious and really big, we took half of them away. If you stay inside, you can take a free coffee or tea for everyone who orderes a dessert. The place is very cozy and beautiful as a fairytale, we were really enjoying our stay there. Owners were really nice and kind! Turned out it's family business and we even listened to their son playing the piano. So we totally recommend this place and we will come back there for sure!!
