Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary
Ιερός Καθολικός Ναός Μεταστάσεως της Θεοτόκου
Visitors say
Perhaps the only place on the island of Lesbos where you can attend Catholic Mass. They take place every Sunday at 11:00 AM.
A small church, not noticeable from the street. Inside, a girl was playing the piano; she has a beautiful voice. I recommend visiting 🫶
About
Tucked along Mytilene's bustling Ermou Street, the Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary serves the small Roman Catholic community on Lesvos — and quietly holds one of the most surprising sacred treasures in Greece: the relics of Saint Valentine, the third-century martyr whose feast day inspired the modern celebration of love.
The relics' journey to Lesvos is a story of inheritance and devotion. In 1815, Pope Pius VII gifted Saint Valentine's bones to a noble Italian priest. The relics passed through generations of his family until, in 1907, a descendant who had settled in Mytilene brought them to the island's Catholic church. That same year, on April 27, the Catholic Archbishop of Smyrna, Domenico Maregos, conducted a formal autopsy and certified their authenticity.
The relics remained in Mytilene for most of the twentieth century before being moved to the Italian community's church in Athens in 1990. They returned home to Lesvos in 2014, where they have rested ever since.
Every February 14th, the Catholic community of Mytilene celebrates Saint Valentine with a solemn archieratic mass — a quiet, deeply rooted tradition stretching back more than 120 years, long predating the commercial Valentine's Day most of the world celebrates today.
Visitors are welcome year-round. Inside, the church is modest in scale but warm in atmosphere, with a small reliquary holding the saint's bones near the altar. Whether you come for the religious significance, the unexpected history, or simply to stand quietly with one of Greece's more unusual claims to fame, the church offers a few minutes of stillness amid Mytilene's busy commercial heart.
Before you go
What to expect
The church sits on busy Ermou Street but steps inside feel immediately calm and intimate, a world apart from the commercial street outside. The focal point is a small reliquary near the altar holding the bones of Saint Valentine — relics that arrived via a papal gift in 1815 and returned permanently to Lesvos in 2014 after a stint in Athens. It is modest in scale, closer to a chapel than a cathedral, but the weight of the history here is quietly remarkable.
Best time to visit
Open year-round; February 14th is when the Catholic community celebrates a solemn archieratic mass, a tradition stretching back over 120 years.
How to get there
The church is on Ermou Street in central Mytilene, within easy walking distance of the port and the main square — no car needed.

Older reviews: Today, 14.02.19, was an unforgettable evening under the sounds of the ANIMATO choir... the celebration of Saint Valentine's Day in the city of Mytilene, culminated at 18:00, with a Solemn Hierarchical Divine Liturgy at the Catholic Church of the Transfiguration of the Theotokos and a procession of the relics of the Saint, through the streets of the Agora and Prokymeia.

Very nice place, worth visiting when you are in Mytilini. It was quite hard to find entrance (from the street there is only one plate/sign on the main gate) but people on the street will help you find church. Very nice and friendly people during the mass. Very nice choir and it was very amazing hearing church songs and sermon about helping to another people. Mass in English, French and also another languages. I believe it's the only catholic church on the island if you want to participate in the mass. From Petra it was quite far to reach but we managed:))
