About
The Limenarchio Mitilinis — the Port Authority and Harbor Master's Office of Mytilene — sits at the heart of the island's maritime life, overseeing the bustling harbor that has connected Lesvos to the wider Aegean world for centuries. Mytilene's port has long been one of the most significant in the northeastern Aegean, handling ferry traffic, fishing vessels, and private craft alike, and the Limenarchio is the administrative nerve center that keeps it all running. The building itself reflects the layered history of the waterfront, part of a harbor district shaped by Ottoman-era commerce, Greek state administration, and the rhythms of island life that have changed little in their essentials.
For visitors, the Limenarchio is less a destination in itself and more an anchor point for understanding the character of Mytilene's seafront. Those arriving by ferry or planning to depart to nearby islands such as Chios or the Turkish coast can stop here for the practical paperwork and scheduling information that governs inter-island and international crossings. The surrounding harbor promenade, with its cafes, fish tavernas, and the constant activity of boats coming and going, makes this corner of the waterfront one of the most animated in the city. The air carries salt and diesel, the sound of rigging, and the call of fishermen returning with their morning catch.
Whether you are sorting out your onward journey or simply soaking in the texture of a working Greek port, the area around the Limenarchio offers an authentic glimpse into the logistical and social fabric of island life. Lesvos has always been a place where the sea is not scenery but livelihood, and the Harbor Master's Office stands as a quiet but essential reminder of that enduring relationship between the island and the water that surrounds it.
Before you go
What to expect
The quayside energy around the Harbor Master's Office is distinctly working-port rather than tourist-port — fishing crews offloading morning catches, ferry passengers checking schedules posted in the window, the smell of salt and diesel mixing with coffee from the neighbouring cafes. It functions today much as it did a century ago, with the bureaucratic rhythm of island maritime life playing out in plain sight.
Best time to visit
The waterfront is most animated from spring through early October, when inter-island ferry services run at full frequency and the fish tavernas along the promenade are in full swing.
How to get there
The Limenarchio sits directly on Mytilene's harbour front, a short walk from the main ferry terminal — look for the official building facing the water near the moored fishing boats.

The one in the port police, the scoundrel who writes down anyone who even wants to buy someone a coffee, is a very stupid person. In general, in Mytilene, you have nothing to play with, and you write down anyone who wants to.

If you arrived by car, you first park the vehicle in the area indicated by the officer. Then all passengers go through passport control in the same order. After passport control, pedestrian passengers enter Mytilene. For passengers arriving by car, the driver is directed to an officer with their green insurance, passport, and vehicle registration. After the officer gives approval, they go to the vehicle with an approval card, the customs officer checks the vehicle, and if there are no problems, entry is granted.

Excellent hospitality, the police officers who arrested me were polite and good at their job. We played 80s disco music during the deposition, which helped me a lot to overcome the stress of the case. The process ended with summary procedures, while my only complaint is the lack of patience to wash off the fingerprint ink before the kids chased me away, resulting in me having to do it at home with soap, which was quite time-consuming. I highly recommend it as the best place to get arrested even though I don't have much experience. My greetings to the kids, unfortunately they won't see me again because I'm now within the law. Good freedom.

Good morning, Happy New Year and Happy New Year because of these Holy Days to my colleagues at the port authority of Mytilene and my complaints to the administration of the port authority of Mytilene, let's try in the new year that the administration is not so wooden and so instead of colleagues towards its existing staff that a mother with many children is seconded. Good morning without any prior notice because of course this is very difficult for the administration (let's be a little more flexible please) and while she has arranged her stay for the time she will be there in accommodation and to make your life a little easier, she flies her 61 kilometers away from the center of Mytilene to a remote port authority beyond the remote one, thus making her daily life and any family problems difficult for her easy transition. With respect and my thanks, the husband complaining to the administration of the port authority of Mytilene.

Unfortunately, they are unable to line up the cars in the waiting area for boarding. Our time is being wasted, as is our patience. Fortunately, the 3 rows of cars realized in time that they were going to put us on the ship for Kavala, instead of Piraeus, even though we had informed them of our destination from the beginning.

The ferries from Ayvalik Turkey arrive at this port. At least 3 ferries arrive at the same time and suddenly a long line appears for customs control. Once you enter the building it is well maintained with ACs and seats. There are at least 3 counters for passport control, which speeds up the clearance process.
